Our hypocrisy on unaccompanied minors

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free!”

– Emma Lazarus, from a plaque on the Statue of Liberty near Ellis Island

Apparently those words don’t apply to the tens of thousands of Central American children as young as five who’ve braved the dangerous trip to America in recent years, because the House of Representatives, in a party in vote dominated by Republicans have decided that those children, escaping rape, and robbery, and murder in some of the most violent countries in the world, don’t count as huddled masses yearning to be free.

To House Republicans, who allocated nearly $700 million to send these children back to be murdered by the very thugs they tried to escape, the lives of those unaccompanied minors are not worth saving.

Thank God the legislation will never make it through the Senate. But that’s not the point.
