The gun violence must stop, and here’s what we’re doing about it
We can’t keep going through weekends like the one we just had, where nine shootings left 3 dead and eight wounded. We can’t keep going through years where the level of gun violence is higher than the last. We can’t celebrate new holidays when almost every day is peppered with gunshots.
We must stop killing each other. Because if we win on voting rights and there’s no one left to cast a ballot, none of it will matter. If we win on the minimum wage and the workers have all died of gunfire, none of it will matter. If we win on police reform but our young folks are not here to see it, none of it will matter.
We must stop killing each other, because if one person is killed and someone retaliates, then someone else is killed and someone retaliates, we will all have our vengeance, but we won’t have our lives. And all that revenge won’t matter.
We must stop killing each other. So today, ManUpPHL will start restart our Listening to the Streets program. We’ll bring in a group of young men to talk about what they believe can stop the gun violence in Philadelphia. And, over eight sessions, we’ll listen to them, mentor them, provide them with therapy, and prepare them for work. Along the way we’ll pay them a $240 stipend, and at the end we’ll connect them with a job offer and a mentor.
