The 2020 Census shows America becoming more diverse–and racists are scared to death

When the 2020 census numbers were released yesterday, they showed that for the first time in our nation’s history, the white population declined, and America is becoming a more racially and ethnically diverse country.

For those who believe America is a white nation, racial diversity is a scary thought. It’s scary to know that for the first time, whites make up less than 60 percent of the population. It’s scary to know that Latinos make up the majority of people in California. It’s frightening to realize that the population growth in Texas is driven by Black and brown people.

Because if you’ve spent centuries locking others out of America’s promise; if you’ve engaged in systemic racism to make others a permanent underclass; if you are trying to keep Black and brown people from voting, you might fear that we’ll do the same to you.

Well, I can’t predict the future, but I can tell you this. Equality is not a bad thing. It is a healthy thing. And it’s about time America got healthy. In a healthy country, you strive to live up to your ideals. You don’t try to find ways around them. In a healthy country, the law protects all the people, not just the ones on top. In a healthy country, the leaders act in the interest of the people, not just to benefit themselves.

Black people are shot by cops because there’s a fear that we might get on top. Brown people are demonized at the border for fear they might get on top. Trump supporters stormed the capitol because when Black and brown people vote, we sometimes come out on top.

Maybe I’m naïve to think this, but if we actually work together, if we admit that racism is real, if we work toward common goals, we won’t have to worry about who’s on top, because we’ll all have a chance to get there.

Like everyone else, I was surprised that Bill Cosby’s sexual assault conviction was overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. It’s one thing for me to believe that Cosby was treated unfairly by a racist criminal justice system. It’s quite another thing for the state’s highest court to say Cosby’s due process rights were violated. Read on @whyy
