Lawyer representing a man accused of killing Ahmaud Arbery says he doesn’t want Black pastors in the courtroom

So, what do you do if you’re William Roddy Bryan, and you’re one of three white men arrested for the murder of a black man named Ahmaud Arbery? Well, if you’re in Glynn County Georgia, and racism is the order of the day, you hire a lawyer like Kevin Gough to say racist things like this:

“We don’t want any more Black pastors coming in here or other Jesse Jackson–whoever was in here earlier this week, sitting with the victim’s family trying to influence a jury in this case.”

Of course, Jesse Jackson was not at the trial, but what difference does it make. If you’re Kevin Gough and you’re representing the good old boy network, all Black pastors look alike. Which offends me because, while I’m not a pastor, I’ve preached a word or two in my day, and I’m pretty sure Al Sharpton—the guy who was in the courtroom, looks nothing like Jesse Jackson, the guy who wasn’t.

But that’s not the point, is it? The point is, the men who killed Ahmaud Arbery are supposed to be able to get away with it because in a small southern town, guys like them are supposed to be judged by a jury of their peers, not by nationally known civil rights leaders who can shine an even bigger spotlight on their crime.

Bryan’s lawyer said as much when he complained in open court that the jury pool didn’t have enough older white men without college degrees, men he said were “euphemistically known as ‘Bubba’ or ‘Joe Six Pack.'”

Let that sink in. The men who killed Ahmaud Arbery want to be judged by old white guys named Bubba—men who might let them go free. But if they can’t get Joe Sixpack a turn on the jury, maybe they can get the jury to turn on Sharpton.

I’m a huge Jalen Hurts fan, but this loss is on him. I know Scott fumbled and Reagor dropped that last pass, but you can’t throw 3 interceptions in a game. Hopefully he learns from this and stops forcing passes into coverage. #frustrating
The acquittal of #KyleRittenhouse opens the door for white vigilantes to kill anyone they want to. It also puts a spotlight on the judge’s biased actions during the trial.
God is so good. Two years ago today we founded @ManUpPHL with a citywide meeting on gun violence. Tonight we celebrate that with a dinner and strategy session with mentors and mentees who are working together to change lives. We are fully funded, we have committed volunteers, and we have a Listening to the Streets initiative that gets brothers off the streets and into jobs. This week we release our first white paper based on that program. We work to end gun violence one life at a time. Can’t wait to see what the next two years brings!

The look on this border agent’s face as he grabs this #Haitian migrant at the border says it all. I am so hurt to see Black people treated this way. It looks like a scene out of #Roots.
