Join ManUpPHL to do your part to stop gun violence
We should be angry that more than 100 children under 17 have been shot in Philadelphia this year. We should be mad about the fact that more than a quarter of those children died.
In a city where homicide is a way of life for some, we have to carve out another path. We have to make another way. We have to do whatever we can to save our children, and our brothers, and our uncles, and our sons. We have to man up.
Because here is the cold hard truth. There is no one solution to the gun violence we see in our streets. Some of it is due to broken homes where children are raising themselves. Some of it is about lack of education and scant opportunity. Some of it is about people who’ve been abused, because hurt people hurt people. And at the root of much of what we see in our community, there is racism, and systems that have long been set up for us to fail.
When the school system prepares kids for jobs in fast food, there will be violence. When the banking system refuses to give loans in Black communities, there will be violence. When the governing system tells us we can’t vote like other people, there will be violence.
And that leaves us with a choice. We can put our skills aside and complain, or we can out our skills together and take action. Today, ManUpPHL will take action, and we want you to be part of it. Join us at City Hall at 6 pm to volunteer, to speak up, to reach out, to change lives. You can mentor or do social work, you can provide jobs or education. You can do social media or computer technology. You can be part of the solution.
