Joe Biden has a lot to brag about. But Black folks need more than a speech

Joe Biden will be speaking before a joint session of Congress Wednesday night, and he’s got a lot to brag about.

He said he would have 100 million vaccinations done in his first hundred days. He’s done 200 million. He said he would get stimulus checks in people’s hands. For many Americans, that’s done too. He said he would put Black and Brown people in his cabinet. He’s done it. And if his 2 trillion-dollar infrastructure plan becomes a reality, lots of people will be getting work.

There is, however, one thing that Biden needs to handle if he wants to remain on top. Black folks are still getting shot by police, and there seems to be no end in sight. Derek Chauvin is convicted for killing George Floyd, and another cop kills Ma’Khiah Bryant, and another kills Daunte Wright, then a group of them kill Andrew Brown and try to hide the video from the public.

This is not coincidence. It’s not a few bad apples. It’s not some kind of accident. No, this is a pattern of behavior that defies state boundaries, defies rationale, and defies explanation. This is racism, plain and simple, and while Joe Biden acknowledged its existence after the Chauvin verdict, he now has to do something about it.

I’m glad Biden sent his Justice Department to investigate police departments in Louisville and Minneapolis. I’m glad he said he’s supporting the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. But I need Biden to do everything possible to get it passed. Because stimulus checks don’t matter if you’re not alive to spend them. Infrastructure doesn’t matter if you can’t drive while black. Promises don’t matter if we don’t see them come true. So, if Black Lives Matter, Mr. President, prove it by giving more than a speech. Prove it by making sure we live.
