Investigate the murders of Black men like you investigate JonBenet Ramsey

The case of JonBenet Ramsey is once again in the news. She was murdered 25 years ago at the tender age of six. It was a case that captivated the nation, and it still draws major interest from investigators in Boulder, Colorado.

Maybe that’s why they announced this week that they’d analyzed nearly 1,000 DNA samples to find the killer. They’ve received over 21,000 tips, letters and emails. They’ve traveled to 19 states in an effort to find who killed that little girl.

Can you imagine if we were that relentless about gun violence in Philly? Sadly, that’s not the case, because the young Black men who make up the majority of victims aren’t valued by those in power.

Since 2015, nearly 2,700 young Black men were wounded in shootings, but suspected shooters were convicted in only 6% of those cases.

So, in a year where there were 547 homicides by Christmas, don’t expect the pattern to change. Most of the shootings in Philadelphia will not be solved. And most will not be investigated like the case of JonBenet Ramsey.

How many times have you heard investigators say they’ve analyzed 1000 DNA samples to find a Black person’s killer? Or 100 DNA samples? Or 10 DNA samples?

How many times have you heard them say they’ve traveled to 19 states?

Have you ever heard of investigators interviewing 1000 people or processing 1,500 pieces of evidence to find the murderer of a Black man in North Philly? Well, that’s what they’ve done to find JonBenet Ramsey’s killer. And I’m sure they won’t stop until there’s justice.

But I need that kind of determination when Black people are murdered in our city, because just like Jon Benet Ramsey was somebody’s child, the victims in Philly belong to somebody, too. And even if they can’t get justice, the least we can do is try.

I’m a huge Jalen Hurts fan, but this loss is on him. I know Scott fumbled and Reagor dropped that last pass, but you can’t throw 3 interceptions in a game. Hopefully he learns from this and stops forcing passes into coverage. #frustrating
The acquittal of #KyleRittenhouse opens the door for white vigilantes to kill anyone they want to. It also puts a spotlight on the judge’s biased actions during the trial.
God is so good. Two years ago today we founded @ManUpPHL with a citywide meeting on gun violence. Tonight we celebrate that with a dinner and strategy session with mentors and mentees who are working together to change lives. We are fully funded, we have committed volunteers, and we have a Listening to the Streets initiative that gets brothers off the streets and into jobs. This week we release our first white paper based on that program. We work to end gun violence one life at a time. Can’t wait to see what the next two years brings!
