Dr. Fauci has alerted America to a new public health crisis–gun violence
Maxine Waters, who we all know as Auntie Maxine, told Jordan to respect the chair and shut his mouth–and he did. But now Fauci’s in the news again. Not because of coronavirus, but because of the other public health crisis that’s killing Americans in droves.
It’s not heart disease, diabetes or cancer. No, the public health crisis Fauci’s talking about now is gun violence.
“As a public health person, I think you can’t run away from that,” Fauci told CNN. “I mean, in this last month, it’s just been horrifying. How can you say that’s not a public health issue?”
It’s good that Fauci recognizes that fact. It’s hard not to after mass shootings in Asian massage parlors in Georgia, a supermarket in Colorado, and a FedEx facility in Indianapolis. Those headlines are hard to miss. And all of us should be concerned.
And while the mass shootings have made people like Fauci and President Biden recognize gun violence as the public health crisis it is, we have the equivalent of mass shootings in Philadelphia and other cities every day.
The victims may not be shot in one place or by one person, but the carnage is still the same. The grieving is still the same. The tragedy is still the same.
So, while I’m concerned about the mass shootings my media colleagues seem to care about, I’m equally concerned about the shootings killing my people every day. Because it’s not up to other folks to care about our communities. Saving our own lives is up to us.
