Banning critical race theory does not hide America’s racism. It reinforces it.

Texas is the latest state to try to ban critical race theory from being taught in the classroom.

What’s Critical race theory? It’s the study of race and racism in America. Critical race theorists believe that America’s laws create and maintain social, economic, and political inequalities between whites and nonwhites, especially Black people.

And here is my Ebonic version of the obvious question: Is they lyin’? No they’re not.

Slavery in America was legal. And when slavery was abolished, America put a loophole in the 13th amendment saying slavery is allowed if someone is convicted of a crime. Then America spent centuries creating laws to make sure Black people would be trapped in the legal system, and thus be as close to slavery as possible.

Black codes were the legal system. The War on Drugs was the legal system. Police brutality—yeah, that’s the legal system, too.

So yes, the laws of this country have been used to keep a knee on our necks. That’s why it’s so funny to see America pretend that all this stuff is new.

Abusing Asians? That’s not new. Y’all literally had a law called the Chinese Exclusion Act. Wrongful convictions? That’s not new. Y’all been railroading Black people since the day we stepped off the boat. Viral images of abuse? That’s not new, either. Before George Floyd there was Emmitt Till in Jet magazine, his 14-year-old body battered over a white woman’s lie.

But here’s what we need to peep. They want to keep these truths from being taught to our children. Instead, they want us to believe that America is pure and good and always right. That’s a lie too.

Nothing is always right. So, stop banning stuff, teach the whole truth, and let the chips fall where they may. Because kids are the ones who can change racism, but first they must know it exists.

I’m a huge Jalen Hurts fan, but this loss is on him. I know Scott fumbled and Reagor dropped that last pass, but you can’t throw 3 interceptions in a game. Hopefully he learns from this and stops forcing passes into coverage. #frustrating
The acquittal of #KyleRittenhouse opens the door for white vigilantes to kill anyone they want to. It also puts a spotlight on the judge’s biased actions during the trial.
God is so good. Two years ago today we founded @ManUpPHL with a citywide meeting on gun violence. Tonight we celebrate that with a dinner and strategy session with mentors and mentees who are working together to change lives. We are fully funded, we have committed volunteers, and we have a Listening to the Streets initiative that gets brothers off the streets and into jobs. This week we release our first white paper based on that program. We work to end gun violence one life at a time. Can’t wait to see what the next two years brings!
