Arbery and Rittenhouse juries show why Blacks must not shirk jury duty

I’ve thought about juries a lot in the last few weeks. In the case of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black jogger killed in Georgia by a group of white men, only one of the 16 jurors and alternates is Black.

But in Georgia, racism in the courthouse is nothing new. Unfortunately, Georgia’s not alone.

In Kenosha Wisconsin, Kyle Rittenhouse is on trial for killing two men and wounding another as the men were protesting the police shooting of a Black man named Jacob Blake.

Rittenhouse is something of a hero to conservatives. When he was arrested for murder, they raised money for his legal fees, and he was featured on conservative news. Even Donald Trump came to his defense, claiming Rittenhouse shot the men because he was violently attacked.

So, it’s no surprise that Rittenhouse had a sympathizer on the jury. A sympathizer who told a racist joke to a sheriff’s deputy during a break in the trial.

Here’s what he said: “Why did it take seven shots to shoot Jacob Blake?” Then he answered himself: “Because they ran out of bullets.”

To his credit, that deputy told the court. Judge Bruce Schroeder, the circuit court judge presiding over the trial, questioned the juror about his conduct, and asked him to repeat what he’d said.

According to the Associated Press, the juror declined to repeat his comments to the judge, instead attempting to defend them as not having “anything to do with Kyle.”

Kyle—like they’re on a first name basis. The judge dismissed the juror from the case, noting that the public expected fairness in the trial.

An almost all white jury in Georgia … a racist on the jury in Kenosha. What does it have to do with you? It’s simple. When you’re called for jury duty, go. Sit. Serve. Who knows? You might be the only reason we get justice.

I’m a huge Jalen Hurts fan, but this loss is on him. I know Scott fumbled and Reagor dropped that last pass, but you can’t throw 3 interceptions in a game. Hopefully he learns from this and stops forcing passes into coverage. #frustrating
The acquittal of #KyleRittenhouse opens the door for white vigilantes to kill anyone they want to. It also puts a spotlight on the judge’s biased actions during the trial.
God is so good. Two years ago today we founded @ManUpPHL with a citywide meeting on gun violence. Tonight we celebrate that with a dinner and strategy session with mentors and mentees who are working together to change lives. We are fully funded, we have committed volunteers, and we have a Listening to the Streets initiative that gets brothers off the streets and into jobs. This week we release our first white paper based on that program. We work to end gun violence one life at a time. Can’t wait to see what the next two years brings!
